Special Cases of Division
This surveys algorithms and circuits for integer division in special cases. These include division by constants, small divisors, exact divisors, and cases where the divisor and the number base have a special relationship. The related operation of remainder is also covered. Various prior techniques are treated in a common framework. Worked examples are provided together with examples of practica...
متن کاملActions as Special Cases
This paper is motivated by the idea of interaction between two directions of research in knowledge representation: the design of action description languages and the development of libraries of reusable, general-purpose knowledge components. Writing an action description that characterizes actions in terms of their effects, as common today, can be compared to writing a program that does not use...
متن کاملComplexity of Decentralized Control: Special Cases
The worst-case complexity of general decentralized POMDPs, which are equivalent to partially observable stochastic games (POSGs) is very high, both for the cooperative and competitive cases. Some reductions in complexity have been achieved by exploiting independence relations in some models. We show that these results are somewhat limited: when these independence assumptions are relaxed in very...
متن کاملSpecial Cases of the Class Number Formula
Proof. Using that (Z/p)× is a cyclic group of order p − 1 (i.e. the existence of primitive roots), we see that there is a square root of −1 (that is, a non-trivial fourth root of 1) in (Z/p)× if and only if p ≡ 1 mod 4. Suppose now that p ≡ −1 mod 4, and suppose that α and β are two elements of Z[i] such that p|αβ. Then p = N(p)|N(α)N(β), and so (after relabelling if necessary) we may assume th...
متن کاملLinearizable special cases of the QAP
We consider special cases of the quadratic assignment problem (QAP) that are linearizable in the sense of Bookhold. We provide combinatorial characterizations of the linearizable instances of the weighted feedback arc set QAP, and of the linearizable instances of the traveling salesman QAP. As a by-product, this yields a new well-solvable special case of the weighted feedback arc set problem.
